Talks & Workshops
Throughout Salty Weekend, we will run a series of talks and workshops designed to give you the inside scoop and answer all your questions. We don’t have a set itinerary for this yet, as we want to tailor it to exactly what you want. But here are our ideas:
- An insight into the UK traditional ship world (where all the interesting yards are)
- An insight into the UK sail training world (the different charities & vessels)
- Highlights of Excelsior’s 2017 season including Norway
- The realities of working onboard a ship
- How to get a job on a traditional ship
- What qualifications you need, and how to fund them
- Putting together a strong CV
- What employers & skippers are looking for
In addition to covering these topics, we’ll run some making workshops – including splicing, whipping, sail repair etc. These will be run by the fantastic Will Paterson, a regular Excelsior volunteer, who will be joining us onboard for Salty Weekend.
There will also be time given over to helping with some bigger bits of refit work on Excelsior. These workshops will give you a really good idea of the things involved in a traditional vessel’s annual refit, and the amazing work their crew & volunteers do.
Lowestoft IBTC – Exclusive Tour & Workshop
Just around the corner from Excelsior’s Yard in Lowestoft is the Lowestoft IBTC, a world-renowned boatbuilding and training college.
During Salty Weekend we’ll be using some of the IBTC’s facilities. You’ll get the chance to have a look around with an exclusive tour, and chat to existing students & tutors.
In addition, they’re going to run a workshop for – we reckon plank steaming would be good.
Dates Salty Weekend runs from Friday 16th February to Sunday 18th February 2018. The event starts at 10am on Friday morning and finishes at 4pm on Sunday.
Location Salty Weekend takes place onboard Excelsior. She will be moored alongside in her berth next to The Excelsior Yard in Oulton Broad, Lowestoft, UK.
Travel The Excelsior Yard is a few minutes’ walk from Oulton Broad North train station, changing at Norwich for trains to London. We would encourage you to use public transport to join us. Alternatively free parking can be found nearby.
Tickets There are six places available on this Salty Weekend. Places cost £200 per person for the whole weekend, which represents excellent value. Can’t quite afford it, but really want to go? Get in touch with us and we’ll see if we can find you a sponsor or help with fundraising ideas.
Age Salty Weekend is suitable for adults over 16. Excelsior does a lot of sail training work with young people so this would also be a great event for interested 12-16 year olds to attend if they are accompanied by a guardian.
Waiting List Given the nature of this event and the limited availability of tickets, we expect it to sell out quickly. In this event we will operate a waiting list, offering any drop-out spaces to names on the list.
Payment Tickets must be paid in full upon booking. As mentioned above please let us know if this presents a problem for you. Please make payment through our booking system, or get in touch and we can send an invoice.
Refunds We offer full refunds up to 28 days ahead. If you need to cancel after this time, or for any reason can’t attend at the last minute, we will only refund your ticket if your place can be taken by someone else. We will help advertise the space but if a replacement can’t be found, unfortunately we cannot refund you.
Late Bookings If a ticket is purchased within 28 days of the course start date, a 24-hour cancellation period will apply, allowing for a full refund. After this, the ticket becomes non-refundable if your place cannot be taken. Please note the 24-hour cancellation period does not apply to late bookings within 72 hours of the event start date.
What’s Included This includes accommodation, breakfast, lunch and one supper onboard the ‘Excelsior’. Excelsior is a 1921 historically restored working sailing trawler. Accommodation onboard is basic but comfortable, and an unbeatably authentic experience of living onboard a traditional working vessel. Each participant will also receive a free Crew Pack. This will include SaltyJobs & Excelsior t-shirts, wristbands, printed workshop material and more.
What’s Not Included You will need to pay for travel to and from the event, and for one of your evening meals, when we will endeavour to eat at a local pub/restaurant as a group, or get a fish and chip supper takeaway.
What To Bring You don’t need any special gear, equipment or tools. Please bring normal boat gear in a small, soft bag including a sleeping bag and warm clothing. Make sure you only wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and stained – Excelsior has that effect on you! We’ll send joining instructions closer to the time.
