Delivery Crew Success! A SaltyJobs Crew Match Story

The Opportunity

Tall ship Lady of Avenel recently contacted us, needing to find delivery crew for a trip at short notice. They’d posted a role with us before, and wanted to know if we could help again. The Lady of Avenel had been in Gloucester Docks for the Tall Ships Festival running across the May bank holiday.

Lady of Avenel

‘Lady of Avenel’ at sea on passage from Gloucester to Scotland

Lady of Avenel started her season in Maldon, Essex, on the east coast of the UK, where she spends each winter at the Heritage Marine in Downs Road Boatyard. Her crew sailed her north to Scotland, where they transited the Caledonian Canal to arrive in Oban. With the Gloucester Tall Ships Festival beckoning, they didn’t stay long, sailing south down the west coast of England to feature alongside other tall ships over the 27-29th May 2017 bank holiday.

.After a wonderful Tall Ships Festival, Lady of Avenel needed crew to help sail back up to Scotland. Oban will be her summer base when she gets back up there. SaltyJobs posted the job opportunity and promoted it to our targeted audience of passionate sailors via Facebook. With only a couple of days until she needed to be fully crewed, we received immediate response from ideal candidates, one of whom ended up joining Lady of Avenel for the trip up north.

Success! We made a match

Kim Heaton-Heather followed SaltyJobs on Facebook and saw the job listing as soon as we posted it. Sending an email outlining his experience, Kim applied for the role instantly and we passed it on to Lady of Avenel. After getting back from his sailing trip, Kim sent us this lovely message

'Lady of Avenel' delivery crew“Hi. I just wanted to post a quick thank you on here. I’ve just got back from sailing a tall ship from Gloucester to Mallaig in Scotland because of a last minute crew request you posted. It was a great few days and I have you to thank for it. Keep up the good work.”

Success! SaltyJobs managed to help Kim find a perfect delivery crew job on a tall ship, working with our contacts in the industry to find the best marine jobs and opportunities.

Further thoughts – paid delivery crew?

Posting this role also raised some questions. The conversation began not only in the SaltyJobs office, but on our Facebook audience as well. This was an unpaid role, advertised as a working passage. But is it still a ‘job’ if there is no pay? We wanted to give this question a proper answer, so we’ve written a separate blog post about it. Please do contribute your thoughts, let’s get a conversation going.
